In the most poignant moment in Chris Offutt's first novel, ''The Good Brother,'' two enemies meet in the Montana woods. One is Virgil Caudill, a refugee from eastern Kentucky, who has escaped an unconsidered life and a possible murder charge; the other is the murdered man's cousin, who has pursued Virgil across several states to avenge the death. On hearing the familiar accent of his would-be revenger, Virgil feels ''as though he'd been temporarily deaf and had suddenly regained the ability to hear.'' Hardback like new.
